Mike and Dave visited Rancagua at Christmas 1958 and 1959

Reminiscence (MJA)

On the Aerolineas Argentinas flight from England in 1958, there was a MCC cricket team which was to tour Argentina and Chile. The weather was so bad in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro that having taken off from Recife in Northern Brazil, the plane had to land at a Brazilian airforce base (at Vitoria) in the jungle. We landed up playing cricket on the runway with the MCC team. Later we played cards with some team members.

I can remember the team captain Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie (who later became President of the MCC) wearing a shirt with a paper collar which was falling to pieces in the heat and humidity!

At the Chilean end, parents did not know where we were, since communications were almost non-existent. We arrived over 24 hours late.

The aircraft generally used was a four propeller Douglas DC6. After two days plus of flying the ringing of the engines could be heard in the ears for a few days after landing!

The photographs below are stamped "30 DIC. 1958" or 16 ENE.1959" (probably printing dates) and therefore refer to MJA/DGA first visit to Rancagua. DGA's passport gives the dates as 23 December 1958  entry and return on 21 Jan 1959.

Getting ready to go back to Hazelwood School

Mike and Dave in Hazelwood School uniform (just before going to Santiago airport) in front of Humber Hawk car. The car was a Mark 1 or 2 built between 1945 and 1948 and was based on a pre-war Hillman (badge engineering since both Hillman & Humber were owned by Roots). The car had a 4 cylinder 2 litre engine with "superior" finish to its pre-war version.

[The Hillman version appeared in Foyle's War on BBC TV]

Before MJA and DGA's visit to Chile in 1959 The Humber Hawk was replaced by an "American Monstrosity"

MJA and DGA visited Rancagua at Christmas 1959.

Reminiscence (MJA):  In September 1959 MJA moved to Canford School, while DGA still had a final year at Hazelwood School. Our holidays were staggered with MJA starting and ending first.  DGA's old passport gives his entry date as 22 December 1959 and exit 20 January 1960.

The two photographs below are the only ones not dated 1958 or Jan 1959 and therefore assumed to be from MJA/DGA second holiday.

Reminiscence (MJA): MJA (aged 14) had a few tennis lessons in the Braden Stadium. I was then entered for the Braden Company Tennis Tournament. Unfortunately I had to play a twenty-something year old who had significant ability. Result? 6-0, 6-0 in no time. I can't remember if I got any points on his service except for a couple of double faults.

There was also someone playing on the next court who was worse than me (if that was possible)

The compensation was that I would not have been in Chile when the second round was due to take place!
