GMA comments:

In 1954 the BSAA (British South American Airways) service was suspended and the line closed down. GMA agreed to join Braden Copper Company on return from home leave.

The family (excluding Mike & Dave who were at school in England) travelled on the Reina del Pacifico ship from Chile to England via the Panama canal and spent the summer based at Wanstead (Walliss family home) before returning to Chile on the same ship.

Joined Braden in Rancagua (see also GMA at Work (Play) section) . Promised company house was not available, so rented a house in town, not far from the Braden "Patio" (rail terminal, foundry, associated workshops, copper platform, warehouses, offices, Staff house for management personnel etc).

Transfer to Braden Santiago office and lucky enough through friends at Bank of London & South America  managed to rent the very fine house in NOCEDAL.

NO PHOTOGRAPHS OF FIRST STAY IN RANCAGUA.

In  1955  the family moved back to Santiago to Nocedal

Nocedal is off Principe de Galles in the La Reina district which is south of Las Condes. The house backed onto the golf course of the Prince of Wales country club.

GMA comments: During our time at Nocedal we bought the Humber Hawk Car.

MJA: I can  remember being picked up at Santiago airport by the Humber which was definitely a swish car for the time!

This was the first school that Lin and Pete went to in Santiago.

The next photographs were taken when MJA/DGA returned to Chile for their school summer holidays (but winter in Chile therefore the cardigans) in  1956. From DGA's old passport we entered Chile on 30 July and left on 19 September

MJA: The photograph "Mummy & Her Brood" was probably taken as Mike(11) and Dave (10) were about to be driven to Santiago airport
to return to England and Hazelwood School in Surrey. (19 September).
Lin would have been five  years old & Pete three.
The car in the background is the Humber Hawk

GMA Reminiscence:  The owner of the house decided to retire and returned from the wilds of southernmost Chile (all sheep) [but see Chile 2007] and sell the house. GMA said that if he had known the property was for sale, that he would have purchased it.

The family moved to a house in Austria, a street in the Providencia area of Santiago. This was closer to the centre of the city than previous properties.

No photographs taken at this house. ( Mike & Dave never visited)
